The game opens with you, Inspector Vogel, having been sent to investigate a missing tourist. The only way out of the village square is a stone bridge, but it’s blocked by Frau Dachs, the hedgehog-minder. She is a wall of tweed and passive aggression.
All standard adventure game logic fails. Giving her the wine makes her accuse you of bribery. Asking about the weather triggers a 10-minute monologue about the 1972 fungal blight. The trick is observation. Look at her hedgehog, Gustav. It is limping.
Now, most guides will say: “Use the first-aid kit on Gustav.” Wrong. If you touch Gustav, she will hit you with a broom. The correct solution, the one the bad guides omit, is to first examine the boot-scraper by the church door. Notice the rare, copper-colored moss. Combine the moss with the vinegar from the inn’s kitchen to make a poultice. Then simply mention to Frau Dachs, “I know a remedy for arthritic hedgehog paws.” unteralterbach 21 guide
She will cry. She will move. She will give you her late husband’s dental pliers. You have no idea why you need dental pliers. You will. Welcome to Unteraltenbach.
You have made it to the hermit’s hut. He is not the missing tourist. The tourist is inside the woodpile. The hermit knows this. The puzzle is not to rescue the tourist. The puzzle is to ask to rescue the tourist without using any verbs. The game opens with you, Inspector Vogel, having
This is the infamous “Silent Confession.” The hermit will only agree to free the tourist if you communicate via a single in-game action: placing an object on his table. The correct object is not the badge, the warrant, or the photo of the tourist’s family.
The correct object, which you could have only discovered by examining the back of the inn’s menu on your very first screen, is a single, unshelled hazelnut. All standard adventure game logic fails
Place the hazelnut on the table. The hermit will stare at you for a real-time count of 47 seconds. Then, he will crack it open with his teeth, eat the kernel, and say, “Ah. A trade. Silence for silence.”
He will dismantle the woodpile. The tourist is alive. The case is closed. The bridge is no longer a barrier.
This walkthrough is designed to get you to the True Final Ending (Ending 21). Beware: This route requires precise dialogue choices.
