She was the "Office Wife"—a term the game used not literally, but to describe her role. She remembered birthdays, she knew how you took your coffee, she smoothed over your mistakes with the boss. She was the ghost in the machine that kept the company running.
As Marcus played through the in-game "Day 1," he realized this "Unofficial Redux" version was different from standard visual novels. The writing was hyper-specific. The dialogue described a vending machine that only worked if you kicked it on the left side. It mentioned the smell of the carpet cleaner used on the third floor.
Marcus froze. He minimized the game window and looked around his real office. The third-floor carpet cleaner did smell exactly like industrial lemons, just as the game described. He looked back at the screen.
Elara was speaking: "You're working late again. You shouldn't drink the coffee from the pot after 9 PM. It burns."
Marcus hadn't clicked an option to look at the coffee. He glanced at the pot on his desk. It was burned.
"Creepy coincidence," he whispered, but the atmosphere in the room had shifted. The jazz music seemed to syncopate with the flickering of the fluorescent light above his head.
He progressed to "Day 3." The game introduced a mechanic called "The Redux Log." It was a menu that tracked the player's "Corporate Karma." The "v091" build was unstable, noted in a readme file Marcus found later. It contained debug features that weren't meant for players. Against his better judgment, he toggled it.
The game window flickered. The background art of the office changed. It no longer looked like a generic stock image. It looked like a sketch of his cubicle. The perspective was slightly off, as if drawn from the security camera in the corner of the ceiling.
Elara appeared on screen again, but her sprite had changed. She was wearing a dark cardigan, the same one his real-life office manager, Mrs. Gable, wore every Tuesday.

The lights in the real office cut out. Not just his row, but the entire floor. The only light came from his monitor.
On screen, Elara smiled. It was a warm, maternal smile that didn't reach her eyes.
"I have a new task for you," the text scrolled slowly, letter by letter. "Don't leave. I need to install the update. It’s a big one."
Marcus heard the elevator ding down the hall. The sound of heels clicking on the linoleum echoed through the dark corridor. Click. Click. Click. They were slow, rhythmic, and getting closer.
He tried to pull the power cord from the tower. His hands fumbled in the dark. The screen brightened, blinding him for a second.
The text on the screen changed one last time before the computer powered itself down with a dying whir. "Saving Progress... User: Marcus. Status: Archived."
The footsteps stopped right behind his chair. Marcus held his breath, staring at the black reflection of the monitor in the dark.
A hand, soft and smelling of lavender and old paper, rested on his shoulder.
"Good evening, Marcus," a voice whispered from the dark, sounding exactly like the synthesizer jazz from the game. "Let's finish what you started."
The next morning, the IT department found Marcus’s desk empty. His computer was wiped clean, except for a single file sitting on the desktop. It was an executable, the icon depicting a silhouette in a pencil skirt.
The filename read: The Office Wife Unofficial Renpy Redux v092 Portable.
The file size was exactly one soul larger than it had been the night before.
