Starting my journey with The Great Queen Seondeok! 🏹✨
Just finished Episode 1 and I am hooked. The backstory of Princess Cheonmyeong and the prophecy sets such a high-stakes tone. I’ve heard Mishil is one of the best villains in K-drama history, and after this first episode, I can see why—her ambition is terrifying! the great queen seondeok ep 1
Excited to see how Deokman rises from these circumstances. If you’ve seen this classic, no spoilers please! 🙈

No analysis of Episode 1 is complete without discussing the character who hijacks the entire screen: Lady Mi-shil (Go Hyun-jung). Even in her relatively brief appearance in this episode, Mi-shil is terrifying, magnetic, and instantly iconic. The emotional core of Episode 1 is the
Mi-shil is not the queen. She is the King’s concubine, but she holds more power than the entire royal court. She commands her own private army, the Hwarang (which she has corrupted into her personal assassins), and she sees the throne as her birthright. When she learns of the twin birth, she doesn’t see a tragedy—she sees an opportunity.
In a stunning scene, Mi-shil confronts a royal astrologer. She demands a prophecy regarding the twin princesses. The astrologer, trembling, reveals a vision: "The twin stars will clash. One will fall, and one will rise to become the first female king of Silla. She will bring a golden age, but only after bathing the land in blood."
Mi-shil’s reaction is not fear. It is cold, calculated rage. She immediately realizes that the "fallen" twin is the one she can manipulate, but the "rising" twin—the one who will become queen—must be destroyed. The episode brilliantly establishes that the entire conflict of the next 60 episodes will not be a simple good vs. evil fight. It is a chess match between two women: one born in the palace (Mi-shil) and one born to replace her. No analysis of Episode 1 is complete without
The drama wastes no time in raising the stakes. Queen Maya gives birth to twins—a double blessing, but in the superstitious times of Silla, a bad omen (the "seduction of the twin flowers"). Mishil seizes this moment of vulnerability. She plots to kill the infants to secure her own path to the throne.
In a heart-wrenching sequence, the royal nanny, So-Hwa, is tasked with the unthinkable: protecting the children. Due to a chaotic assassination attempt and a mix-up, So-Hwa is forced to flee the palace with one of the twins, Deokman, leaving the other twin, Cheonmyeong, behind to be raised as the official princess.
The tragedy of Episode 1 is the separation. A mother loses her child, and a sister loses her twin. Deokman is whisked away into the desert, far from the silk robes of the palace, destined to grow up in the dust and wind, unaware of her royal blood.

Currently Watching: The Great Queen Seondeok (Ep. 1) Status: Speechless. The politics are already messier than my entire life. Mishil really said "I run this palace." 💅
