Husainiyah - Sholawat
Sholawat Husainiyah is a specific form of Salawat (prayers and blessings upon the Prophet Muhammad). It is famously attributed to the spiritual lineage of the Naqshbandi order and is often associated with Sultan al-Awliya Sheikh Abdullah Daghestani. It is recited widely in Indonesia, Malaysia, and the Muslim world for its rhythmic cadence and profound spiritual impact.
In the vast ocean of devotional poetry and litanies (sholawat) in the Islamic world, most focus solely on praising the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). However, a distinct and emotionally charged branch of sholawat ties the love for the Prophet directly to the love for his family (Ahlul Bayt). Among the most profound of these is Sholawat Husainiyah.
Named after Imam Husain (RA), the martyred grandson of the Prophet, this sholawat is more than a chant; it is a spiritual bridge connecting the heart of the believer to the tragedy of Karbala and the eternal principles of justice, courage, and unwavering faith. sholawat husainiyah
The mention of "Syuhada'il Karbala'i" (the martyr of Karbala) is not a cry of defeat but a declaration of victory. Imam Husain’s stand against tyranny (Yazid’s forces in 680 CE) is viewed as the ultimate defense of authentic Islam. Reciting this sholawat serves as a spiritual pledge to uphold truth, even when facing overwhelming odds.
Unlike standard sholawat that separates the Prophet from his descendants, Sholawat Husainiyah explicitly links them. In Islamic theology, love for the Ahlul Bayt is considered a sign of true faith. By invoking Husain directly after the Prophet and his father Ali, the reciter acknowledges that loving the Prophet’s family is loving the Prophet himself. While several versions exist across the Nusantara (Indonesian-Malay) and Middle Eastern traditions, a common and powerful rendition of Sholawat Husainiyah is:
"Allahumma salli 'ala Sayyidina Muhammad, wa 'ala Ali Sayyidina Muhammad, wa 'ala Husain, syahidil karbala'i, wa 'ala ahli baytih ajma'in, wa 'ala man tabi'ahum ila yaumid din." In the vast ocean of devotional poetry and
Translation: "O Allah, bestow Your grace and peace upon our Master Muhammad, and upon the family of our Master Muhammad, and upon Husain, the martyr of Karbala, and upon all his household, and upon those who follow them until the Day of Judgment."
Sholawat Husainiyah is particularly popular in Indonesia, Malaysia, and Brunei, where Islam was spread largely by Sufi missionaries who deeply revered the Ahlul Bayt. It is commonly recited in:
Musically, the qasidah style of Sholawat Husainiyah is distinct: slow, deep, and sometimes accompanied by the rhythmic beat of a rebana (frame drum), but with minor-key tones that evoke both longing (rindu) to the Prophet and empathy for Husain’s suffering.
