If you own Don't Starve or Don't Starve Together on Steam, you already have the official tools installed (if you installed them via the DLC tab).

Option B (GUI):

RTTEX files are often highly compressed (e.g., DXT5 at 4:1 or 8:1 ratio). A lossless PNG will be 3x to 5x larger than the original RTTEX. If disk space is a concern, consider converting to DDS (DirectDraw Surface) instead, which retains the original GPU compression.

This is a gray area. Roblox's Terms of Service generally prohibit scraping assets for use outside of Roblox. However, converting your own textures (created by you) from RTTEX to PNG for backup purposes is generally considered fair use.

If you are converting textures from a game you do not own, you may violate copyright law. Always ensure you have permission from the asset creator before redistributing PNG files derived from RTTEX.

As of late 2024 and early 2025, Roblox has been shifting toward more standard formats on the backend, but RTTEX remains the standard for published experiences. Until Roblox adopts WebP or AVIF natively for texture storage, the need for RTTEX to PNG conversion will persist.

Newer tools are emerging that convert RTTEX directly to WebP for web use, or to TGA for VFX work. However, PNG remains the most requested output format due to its lossless compression and universal compatibility.
