Phantom Luts Upd

Performing the update requires caution. You cannot simply drag and drop over old files; the file naming structure has changed.

Phantom LUTs are a specific, proprietary set of lookup tables created by ARRI for their Alexa camera lineup (Alexa 35, Alexa Mini LF, Alexa Classic, etc.). They are not third-party creative LUTs.

The core idea: Phantom LUTs allow you to monitor a de-saturated, high-sensitivity image in the viewfinder/on-set monitor while still recording a normal LogC image to card.

In simple terms: They separate what you see from what you record.

Alexa 35 also allows custom user Phantom LUTs via ARRI Look File Generator. phantom luts upd

These cameras do not support internal LUT recording, but they support Monitor LUTs (View Assist).

Step 1: Download the UPD Package

Step 2: Format Your SD Card (In Camera)

Step 3: Import via SD Card (Computer)

Step 4: Load in Camera

Troubleshooting: If the camera says "No LUT file found," your card structure is wrong, or the LUT size is too large (stay under 5MB per file).

Unlike software, LUT files don’t display a version number in your NLE. Here’s how to stay on top of it:

Pro tip: Phantom LUTs often send an email when a major update is released. Make sure you’re subscribed. Performing the update requires caution

Phantom LUTs are about suggestion, not declaration. The best ones are the least noticed—felt as atmosphere and cohesion rather than a branded color stamp. Treat them as mood architects: subtle scaffolding that supports story and emotion without calling attention to itself.

If you want, I can:

Old Phantom LUTs were based on ARRI’s pre-2022 LogC3. The UPD version shifts the color matrix to the new LogC4 (introduced with the Alexa 35). LogC4 offers better violet/blue separation in shadows and a wider dynamic range for specular highlights.

| Scenario | Phantom LUT Choice | Notes | |----------|-------------------|-------| | Moonlight exteriors (T2.8, ISO 12800) | Phantom 2 or 3 | Lets you see actors' faces while recording clean LogC. | | Candlelit interior | Phantom 2 | Preserves skin tone separation in monitor. | | Very low-light documentary | Phantom 3 (almost B&W) | Ensures focus pulling possible at ISO 25600+. | | High-contrast day interior (sun through windows) | Phantom 1 | Prevents blown-out monitor image. | | Client wants "filmic" on-set look but you need LogC | Phantom 1 + slight saturation in monitor path | (Advanced: cascade LUTs) | Step 2: Format Your SD Card (In Camera)
