PA-220 Stuck in "Syncing firmware" state after upgrade

Symptoms:

Root Cause:
PA-220’s limited storage (32 GB eMMC) can cause sync timeout if the image is corrupted or free space is below 3 GB.

Recovery Steps:

Palo Alto frequently optimizes memory management for the PA-220. Because the PA-220 has only 4 GB of RAM and a dual-core CPU (compared to larger 5200 series), firmware updates often include specific memory leak fixes and session table optimizations.

Sometimes a firmware upgrade resets the candidate config state. Perform a commit force: pa-220 firmware

commit force

Warning: This re-pushes the entire configuration, which can drop sessions briefly.

From the CLI:

show system disk-space

Ensure you have at least 1.5 GB free. The PA-220 firmware requires space for the download, extraction, and a rollback partition.

Solution: The PA-220’s checksum validation is CPU-intensive. Wait 10 minutes. If still stuck, cancel, delete the partial download from /opt/panrepo/cache, and retry using a local HTTP server to bypass CDN corruption. request system software install version 10
