Massimo Bellini is the novel’s greatest gamble. Finelli avoids romanticizing his cruelty; instead, she presents him as a man whose brain chemistry and traumatic past have left him oscillating between chilling tenderness and explosive violence. His dialogue is sparse, often intrusive—he speaks in commands and raw confessions. The “madness” is not a plot device but a central obstacle. He cannot promise safety, only that he’ll destroy anyone else who touches Francesca. This makes the romance inherently unstable, and Finelli leans into that discomfort rather than resolving it too neatly.
Francesca Visconti evolves from captive to catalyst. Early scenes depict her fighting, biting, and attempting to escape—even after Massimo’s brutal retaliation. Her agency is internal. She learns to read his moods, to manipulate his obsession for her own survival, and eventually, to find a twisted form of power in his devotion. Unlike many dark romance heroines who quickly forgive, Francesca holds Massimo accountable. Their relationship progresses not through grand romantic gestures but through a series of fractured negotiations over boundaries, trust, and violence.
Mila Finelli is currently an independent author, but she has signed with major distribution channels. As of this writing, Mafia Madman is available exclusively through Amazon’s Kindle Unlimited (KU) .
