Often cited as the season’s emotional climax, the Culling on The Ark sees 300 citizens volunteer to be “floated” (ejected into space) to reduce oxygen consumption so the remaining 2,000 can survive. This event occurs simultaneously with the teens partying on Earth, unaware of the sacrifice. The juxtaposition creates unbearable irony: the adults die by rational consent, while the children kill emotionally. Season 1 argues that neither system is moral — only necessary.
