Kenguru Matematika - Verseny

The scoring is unique and encourages strategic guessing:

This system teaches an important life skill: knowing when to guess and when to abstain. If you can eliminate one or two wrong answers, it is mathematically worth guessing.

Because the competition is international, winners receive both national and international recognition. kenguru matematika verseny

In 1993, the Association Kangourou sans Frontières (AKSF) was founded in Paris, with 15 founding countries. By 2023, membership exceeded 80 nations, including Hungary (Kenguru Matematika Verseny), Germany (Mathematik-Känguru), Russia (Русский Медвежонок — language-related spin-off), and Brazil (Canguru de Matemática).

Unlike many STEM competitions, Kangaroo has near-parity in lower grades (girls = 48% of participants in grades 1–4), but a significant drop occurs by grade 10 (girls = 32%). Initiatives in Spain and Italy now feature “Girls in Kangaroo” mentoring tracks and female-authored problems to address this. The scoring is unique and encourages strategic guessing:

Kangaroo problems avoid curricular knowledge alone. Typical categories include:

By removing the need for formal proofs or lengthy calculations, and by awarding partial credit for omitted answers (0 penalty vs. –1 for wrong), students learn that admitting uncertainty is strategic. Studies from the European Mathematical Society (2020) indicate Kangaroo participants report lower math anxiety levels than non-participants, even when controlling for ability. This system teaches an important life skill: knowing

Since 2020, many national Kangaroo contests offer online proctored versions. The AKSF is piloting adaptive digital Kangaroo tests that adjust difficulty based on real-time performance, while preserving the paper-based competition for schools lacking reliable internet.
