The episode opens with a somber tone. Michio Kaga is sitting at his computer in modern Japan. He is bullied, ignored, and lonely. After reading a mysterious pop-up ad for a “new life,” he customizes his character for an unknown game. He selects his race (human), his appearance, and—crucially—his starting bonuses. He chooses a “cheat” skill set that includes stat boosts and unique jobs.
Suddenly, his screen glitches. When he opens his eyes, he is standing in the middle of a cobblestone street in a medieval town. He has arrived in the world of Astria.
