Insect Prison Remake is a complete ground-up reimagining of the 2008 cult classic survival horror game Insect Prison. Developed by Nightmare Swarm Interactive and published by Hollow Shell Games, the remake was released on October 24, 2025. It retains the original’s core premise—a disgraced entomologist trapped inside a living, insect-infested subterranean prison—but significantly expands its narrative, mechanics, and environmental design. The project has been widely praised for transforming a flawed gem into a modern horror masterpiece.
Insects now undergo "Molting Events." During molting, an inmate is vulnerable (and can be harvested for rare "Exuvia essence") but if attacked, the entire species goes berserk. Timing your harvests during planetary alignments (a new astronomical mechanic) is the top skill for experts.
Within three months of release, Nightmare Swarm announced Insect Prison: Brood, a standalone expansion following Cricket’s backstory. A full sequel, Insect Prison: Metamorph, is scheduled for 2027, continuing the “canon” ending where Isla escapes but begins mutating uncontrollably on the surface.
The remake has been cited by developers of Silent Hill 2 Remake and Dead Space (2023) as proof that radical reinterpretation can honor an original’s spirit while creating something entirely new.
The Remake transforms the original’s clunky survival mechanics into a fluid immersive sim with systemic horror.
The original had three endings. The remake has seven. The "True Apiculture" ending requires you to turn your prison into a giant beehive and ascend to a higher plane of existence. To unlock it, you need a "Top" reputation with the Bee faction, which is not accessible until New Game+.
