If you are installing via a USB/ISO media and not using Intelligent Provisioning, follow these steps:

  • Boot the Server:

  • Load Driver:

  • Continue Installation:

  • Do not rely on the default Windows Server 2022 installation media drivers.

During a clean install of Windows Server 2022, the setup might detect a generic storage controller and allow installation to proceed. However, using the generic Microsoft driver instead of the specific HPE driver often results in: hpe smart array s100i sr gen10 driver windows server 2022

You must supply the specific HPE driver during the Windows Setup phase (the "Load Driver" screen).

    Post-driver installation, you should see:

    Example output fragment:

Smart Array S100i SR Gen10 in Slot 0 (Embedded)
Array A (SATA, Unused Space: 0 MB)
Logical Drive: 1 (1.8 TB, RAID 1, OK)

Note: The S100i has no dedicated XOR engine. RAID 5 on Windows Server 2022 will consume high CPU. For production workloads, consider migrating to a hardware RAID controller (P408i-a or P816i-a). The driver cannot fix this architectural limitation.

The driver will inject, and your logical drive should instantly appear. Proceed with normal installation.

    | RAID Mode | Expected R/W (Sequential) | CPU Usage | | :--- | :--- | :--- | | RAID 0 | ~600-800 MB/s | Low (10-15%) | | RAID 1 | ~400-500 MB/s | Medium (15-25%) | | RAID 5 | ~200-300 MB/s | High (30-50%) | Version: 1

Do not use RAID 5 on the S100i with Server 2022 unless you have a very powerful Xeon. Stick to RAID 1 or 10.
