The movie begins with Troy Bolton (Zac Efron) and Gabriella Montez (Vanessa Hudgens) excitedly anticipating their summer vacation. However, their plans are quickly turned upside down when they learn that Sharpay Evans (Ashley Tisdale) and her brother Ryan (Lucas Grabeel) have landed jobs at the luxurious Lava Springs Country Club, which is owned by Sharpay and Ryan's family.

Troy and Gabriella are surprised to find out that Sharpay has offered them jobs at the country club. Troy as a lifeguard and Gabriella as a spa treatment assistant. Sharpay's intention is to sabotage their relationship and to get Troy to perform in her father's musical production.

Throughout the summer, the Wildcats—Taylor (Monique Coleman), Kelsi (Olesya Rulin), Matt (Corbin Bleu), and Martha (Alyson Reed)—also find jobs at the country club. Sharpay attempts to lure Troy away from Gabriella and into her musical, while Ryan tries to woo Gabriella.

The movie ends with Sharpay's plans backfiring. Troy and Gabriella reconcile, and the Wildcats are able to express themselves through a spontaneous performance.
