His phone rings. Unknown number.
RAFAEL ¿Aló?
VALENTINA (over phone) Señor Uribe. My name is Valentina Maldonado. I represent a financial group that… (she pauses, uncharacteristically nervous) …would like to offer you an investment opportunity.
RAFAEL How did you get my number?
VALENTINA You filled out a withdrawal slip at the bank. Carbon copy. The teller is a friend.
RAFAEL I don’t have friends like that.
VALENTINA Everyone has a price, Señor Uribe. I’d like to buy fifteen minutes of your time. Tomorrow. 8 a.m. Café Quindío. Don’t be late.
She hangs up. Rafael stares at the phone.
RAFAEL (to the Virgin painting) Madre, what kind of monster calls at 9 p.m. to talk about money?
CLOSE ON: The painting. The Virgin says nothing. But a candle flickers.
SCENE 7 – EXT. CAFÉ QUINDÍO – NEXT MORNING
A modest corner café. Rafael arrives early in a clean but faded shirt. Valentina arrives exactly at 8:00, in a white blazer and sunglasses she doesn’t remove.
She sits down. She orders a black coffee. He orders a tinto with three sugars.
VALENTINA You won two hundred million pesos yesterday. Congratulations. You are now statistically likely to be bankrupt again within three years.
RAFAEL Good morning to you too.
VALENTINA I’m not here to be your friend. I’m here to make a deal. I know a construction project in Santa Marta. Low risk. High return. You give me 150 million. In six months, I return 200.
RAFAEL And why would you do that?
VALENTINA (removing sunglasses; her eyes are tired, human for once) Because I need fifty million pesos tonight. For my father. And I’m fifty million short.
RAFAEL So the rich woman is asking the poor man for a loan?
VALENTINA I’m not asking. I’m offering a partnership.
Rafael leans back. He studies her. The cold mask is cracking. He sees fear.
RAFAEL You evicted my neighbor last week. Señora Elena. For being two months late on a loan you bought from her bank.
Valentina flinches.
VALENTINA I don’t remember—
RAFAEL Of course you don’t. That’s the problem. (beat) I’ll give you the money. But not as an investment. As a test.
VALENTINA A test?
RAFAEL You say money doesn’t have feelings. I say it does. So here’s my deal: I lend you fifty million pesos. You pay me back in thirty days. No interest. But you have to do it in person. Every week, you bring me a payment. And you explain to me where each bill came from. Whose debt, whose tears, whose broken dream bought that bill.
Valentina laughs. A dry, disbelieving sound.
VALENTINA That’s ridiculous.

She puts the phone down. She extends her hand.
VALENTINA Thirty days. Every Tuesday. You’ll get tired of me by the second week.
RAFAEL (shaking her hand) Hasta que la plata nos separe.
VALENTINA “Until money do us part.” That’s not a contract. That’s a curse.
