The Fix:

When you see the "not responding" message, follow this protocol before clicking "Close program."

When you restart EDIUS:

Open a blank project first, then go to File → Open Project and browse to the auto-save folder.

Copy the recovered sequence to a new project to avoid re-corrupting the same file.
