Dwg Gateway

ArcGIS and QGIS use DWG Gateways to import CAD layers as vector data, converting AutoCAD blocks into GIS points.

✅ You receive DWG files but don’t have AutoCAD.
✅ You need to convert a newer DWG to an older version for legacy software.
✅ You want a lightweight viewer (not AutoCAD or DraftSight).
✅ You need a quick PDF from a DWG without installing heavy software. dwg gateway

Not for editing – it’s a viewer/converter, not a CAD editor.
❌ Not for 3D DWG files (2D only support in free version).

DWG Gateway is a free software tool (often a plugin or standalone utility) that allows you to open, view, and convert AutoCAD .dwg files without having AutoCAD installed. Note: Some antivirus may flag old versions; download

Autodesk’s subscription model is robust but expensive. If your organization has 50 employees who only need to view drawings (not create them), buying 50 AutoCAD licenses is financially reckless. A DWG Gateway provides a "read-only" or "light edit" access for free or at a fraction of the cost.

The next evolution of the DWG Gateway is happening in the browser. Tools like Autodesk Viewer (A360) and BimVue allow you to upload a DWG and share a hyperlink. No software, no plugins.

Why call this a "Gateway"? Because it turns a DWG into a web standard (WebGL).

However, cloud gateways introduce latency. For a 500MB civil engineering map, local software is still king.
