"You shouldn't have downloaded this, Leo."
His own voice. But older. Tired. The kind of tired that comes from seeing things that can't be unseen.
Leo slammed the spacebar. Nothing. Esc. Ctrl+Alt+Del. The keyboard was dead. His mouse cursor was gone. The screen’s black borders crept inward like a vignette closing.
The beach scene dissolved. Now: a bedroom. His bedroom. The one he grew up in—yellow wallpaper, crack in the ceiling shaped like a seahorse. But the bed was empty. The sheets were tangled. On the nightstand, a photograph of a woman he didn't recognize, but his heart said mother. His mother died when he was six. He had no photographs.
