Directed by Roger Kumble, Cruel Intentions is a modernized adaptation of Pierre Choderlos de Laclos's 1782 novel Les Liaisons dangereuses. While the original novel and the 1988 Oscar-winning film version dealt with French aristocrats, Kumble transplanted the intrigue into the hyper-privileged world of Manhattan’s Upper East Side.

The plot revolves around a wager of sexual conquest. Sebastian Valmont (Ryan Phillippe) is a predatory sociopath with a journal detailing his conquests. His step-sister, Kathryn Merteuil (Sarah Michelle Gellar), is a master manipulator masking her malice with the image of a pristine student leader. Kathryn bets Sebastian that he cannot deflower Annette Hargrove (Reese Witherspoon), the headmaster's daughter and a vocal proponent of saving oneself for marriage. If Sebastian loses, he gets nothing; if he wins, he gets Kathryn—the one girl he has never been able to have.
