Main character: Cataleya Restrepo (played by Zoé Saldaña as an adult; Amandla Stenberg as young Cataleya)
Act 1: Childhood in Colombia (1992)
9-year-old Cataleya lives peacefully in Bogotá with her parents, who are involved in drug cartel operations. Her father Fabio has been secretly working as an informant for the DEA. When cartel boss Don Luis discovers this, he sends his ruthless lieutenant Marco (and his men) to kill the family. Cataleya’s parents hide her and tell her to run without looking back. She watches through a gap as her parents are murdered. She escapes by smashing a window, but Marco sees her and shoots — she is hit in the leg but still flees. She hides in the sewer, then makes her way to the U.S. Embassy in Bogotá, where she demands to speak with the CIA. The CIA arranges for her to be sent to Chicago to live with her uncle Emilio, a former hitman.
Act 2: Becoming an assassin
In Chicago, Cataleya grows into a fiercely determined young woman. Emilio refuses to train her as a killer but reluctantly allows her to learn from other criminals. Over 15 years, she becomes a highly skilled assassin, working for Emilio’s network while secretly tracking Marco and Don Luis. She leaves her signature at every kill — a drawing of the Cattleya orchid (the national flower of Colombia, spelled “Cataleya” in Spanish) on her victims’ chests. This is a message to Marco that she’s coming for him. The FBI begins hunting “Cataleya” the assassin.
Act 3: The hunt
Marco, now living in the U.S., realizes Cataleya survived. He kidnaps Emilio and his family to force her out of hiding. Cataleya stages an elaborate, one-woman assault on Marco’s compound. She kills his entire security force, then confronts Marco. She ties him to a chair and recreates the murder of her parents — making him watch as she kills his men, then kills him by slitting his throat. Meanwhile, the FBI surrounds the building. Cataleya escapes through a rooftop explosion she set herself, disappearing into the night, leaving only another orchid drawn on the wall.
Ending
The final scene shows Cataleya walking away from the burning building, free but still alone. She has avenged her parents but lost her uncle. The FBI agent in charge, who had come to respect her, lets her go.
