Your PC stores an encrypted "token" that proves you logged into Xbox Live. These tokens expire. When they do, AoE2 gets confused. It thinks you are logged in, but the server disagrees. The game enters a limbo state—validating—while it desperately tries to fetch a new token.
On the surface, "Validating Subscriptions" sounds like legal jargon. Did I forget to pay my monthly Mangudai tax? Is Microsoft checking if I really own the "Huns" DLC?
Technically, it’s the game performing a cryptographic handshake with the Xbox Live/Steam backend to ensure your profile, purchased content (like the Dawn of the Dukes or Return of Rome), and multiplayer rights are legitimate.
But we all know that's a lie.
In reality, the AoE2 engine—a beautiful, 25-year-old Frankenstein’s monster of spaghetti code and modern middleware—is having a panic attack. It is screaming into the void:
“Are we SURE he’s allowed to have the Polish Folwark bonus? Wait. Freeze everything. I have to check the receipt for the $14.99 expansion pack. The game might crash if we build a Stone Gate right now.”
